Jonathan ODell, Director of Communication Access, Training and Technology Services with the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will be the keynote speaker addressing the challenges for emergency planners and persons who need communication access during disasters. This seminar will provide resources, information and a platform for planning and response.
Intended audience: MRC Volunteers, emergency planners/responders and those who will need to implement communication access during a disaster. The training will include:
Understanding the different communication needs of Deaf, hard of hearing and late deafened people
The importance of providing effective communication access before, during and after an emergency
Communication methodologies including low-tech and high-tech solutions
Opportunity to see and practice on available technology (TTY, Assistive Listening Systems, Alerting Devices, etc.)
Discussion about national and local responses (Katrina & Danvers)

Next Steps in planning
Personal preparedness training for people with hearing loss will follow at 6:30. If you have hearing loss or have a family member who does, please consider participating in that training as well. Information on that training can be obtained from the contact below.
